August 3, 2025 — A comprehensive peer-reviewed study published in August 2025 has provided significant insights into healthcare worker wellness patterns across Rwanda, offering valuable data that will inform wellness programming and support initiatives throughout the region.
The landmark research, conducted across 22 public hospitals throughout Rwanda, surveyed healthcare workers using the internationally recognized Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), the gold standard for measuring occupational wellness patterns. The study represents one of the most thorough analyses of healthcare worker wellbeing conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The research findings show that 21.3% of perioperative providers report experiencing burnout symptoms, with equipment availability identified as the strongest predictor factor (adjusted odds ratio of 3.21, p = 0.02). The study’s robust methodology included controlling for demographic variables, work experience, and institutional factors, providing healthcare leaders with reliable data for planning wellness interventions.
Dr. Eugene Tuyishime, co-founder of the Initiative for Medical Equity and Global Health (IMEGH) and recipient of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) Rising Star Award, noted the research’s significance for understanding healthcare worker experiences. “When healthcare providers don’t have access to essential equipment, it creates moral distress that goes beyond physical fatigue,” he explained. “This research helps us understand exactly where to focus our support efforts.”
The study builds on IMEGH’s ongoing research program, which has been documenting wellness patterns since 2018. The findings align with the organization’s VAST Wellbeing program evaluations, which demonstrated that individual-level interventions work best when combined with systems-level changes.

“The data shows us where we need to act,” noted Dr. Jackson Ndekezi Kwizera, MedWell Event Coordinator and researcher on wellness initiatives. “MedWell Initiative 2025 directly addresses the equipment access issues this study identifies. Our exhibition space connects healthcare providers with medical suppliers, technology companies, and resource partners who can provide practical solutions.”
The study’s publication timing, weeks before MedWell 2025, underscores the event’s relevance. The Exhibition component, featuring 4m x 4m booths available for 400,000 RWF each, brings together medical suppliers, pharmaceutical companies, and technology innovators—exactly the resource providers that can address the equipment gaps the research documents.
Corporate sponsors gain visibility while contributing to solutions. Platinum sponsors (10,000,000 RWF) receive naming rights and premium branding that associates their companies with evidence-based healthcare improvement, while Gold sponsors (5,000,000 RWF) gain prominent recognition for supporting research-informed wellness programming.
The research provides healthcare institutions with concrete data for planning wellness initiatives and resource allocation decisions. The study’s findings will inform policy discussions and funding priorities across Rwanda’s health system.
The MedWell Initiative 2025, taking place October 10-11 in Kigali, will showcase innovative solutions and connect healthcare providers with resources that support professional excellence. Healthcare institutions and solution providers can connect at  info@medwell.com or +250 788 800 929.
